| The small rocky plateau of Kızlar Kaya. |
|
In the valley beyond the Postern Wall and to the right of the street is the Kızlar Kaya ( = The Maidens' Rock). According to an old story there was once a picture or relief of a young girl on the rock face. Since the beginning of the 20th century -at least- no one has reported seeing it. Although Roman/Byzantine masons at work here removed stone blocks, the basic configuration of the site stems from Hittite times. There is a rock platform with various cuttings and bench-like projections that may well have been part of a former structure. Most striking are the chiseled stump-like projections rising from the floor of the platform; they remind one of altars. |
